Break The Cycle

In my daily life, there have been many times when I recognized that I was going in cycles. There have been plenty of moments where I said to myself “wait, I’ve been in this situation before.” By definition, a cycle is “any complete round or series of occurrences that repeats or is repeated.” I have been through cycles of anxiety, depression, fear, failed relationships, worry, etc. Nevertheless, I believe God gives us a way out of these cycles.

I was inspired to discuss this topic from Jonathan McReynolds’ song called Cycles. In the song, McReynolds says “See the devil, he learns from your mistakes even if you don’t. That’s how he keeps you in cycles.” These lyrics always find a way to permeate my soul. The devil is extremely tricky. He studies us and sees our every move; furthermore, he knows exactly what to present to us to make us compromise our relationship with God. However, the best thing we can do to counteract the devil’s schemes is to be able to lean and depend on God.

Transparently speaking, a huge weakness of mine was watching pornography in my teenage years. It had me to where I would watch it in the late night hours and the early mornings. Nevertheless, The most important thing I had to do to overcome my pornography addiction was confessing my issues to God. God is omniscient. This means God is all-knowing. God already knew pornography was going to be an issue of mine even before I was born. With this in mind, once I confess my sins to God, He can allow me to redirect myself back to him. 1 Corinthians 10:13 says “No temptation has overtaken you except what is common to mankind. And God is faithful; He will not let you be tempted beyond what you can bear. But when you are tempted, He will also provide a way out so that you can endure it.” (New International Version). When in a situation of temptation, our great news is God provides a way out of the temptation into His presence. Nevertheless, our responsibility is to go to Him with our issues and be assured that He will help us endure the temptation that comes our way.
